PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS DURING TREATMENT

Chemotherapy can be harsh on skin, hair and nails. The following recommendations are from my own personal experience during chemotherapy as well as my experience in practice.

SKIN

I found my skin was extremely sensitive, not only to sun exposure but to products in general. My recommendation would be to use bland moisturizers and creams during treatment.

For face:

Cleansers: Cetaphil/CereVe cleanser,

Moisturizers: CereVe PM moisturizer, Skinceuticals B5 Hydrating gel, Revision hydrating gel, Vanicream lite facial mositurizer

I would recommend discontinuing any retinoids, retinols, harsh salicylic acid treatments. Steroids, which are a common treatment during chemo cycles, can cause acne breakouts when withdrawn, in addition many of the chemo agents themselves can cause acne. For this I recommend Effaclar Duo by La Roche Posay or Acanya gel (prescription).

For body:

Cleansers: Cereve, Vanicream, Dove or Cetaphil soap, avoid Dial, Ivory, Irish spring, fragranced gel soaps.

Moisturizers: CereVe cream, Vanicream

For hands and feet: Hands and feet get very dry during treatment. I’d recommend thick moisturizers such as Bag Balm, Glytone heel and elbow cream, Cereve healing ointment, Neutrogena norweigen hand formula. Gel socks can be soothing and can be purchased from amazon.
